Goji berries

Welcome to Superfood Health. Over the next few months and years I will be discussing food and fitness with the aim of educating those that are interested about how to get the very best nutrition, fitness and most of all how to have fun doing it. There will be no fad diets or obscure gym equipment. This blog is all about healthy options and a slow steady change to a better diet and a better you.

So without further fanfare lets get cracking with the first food you should look into getting into your diet. And this ladies and gentlemen is Goji Berries.

These are also known as wolf berries, desert thorn and matrimony vine, these berries are grown mostly in Asia and America. These berries are great for their producers as they grow in the most hardened conditions and thrive wherever they are. Goji berries are lovely deep red color and are usually eaten dried like raisins or dates. So why should you start eating them? Well among their many benefits are the following:

--> 1. Increase immunity, which is especially great in the winter to keep you tip top in the cold weather.
2. Improves the quality of your blood. This is done in several ways most notably by improving your circulation in the body and reducing blood pressure and cholesterol. Not bad for a little berry.
3. They improve the overall health of your eyes. This is due to the berries containing carotenoids which assist with protecting the retina of the eye. Another cartenoid that Goji berries contain is zeaxanthin which has been shown to prevent the loss of eyesight in the over 65's.
4. They have a high ORAC value meaning that they help prevent oxidisation and therefore reduce aging making you look and feel younger.
5. They have also been known to prevent fatigue and improve fertility, liver health and reduce kidney problems.

Important: As Goji berries have an effect on circulation, anyone taking prescribed medicine for blood pressure or circulatory issues using products such as warfarin or any anticoagulant drugs or blood thinners should consult their doctor before adding these to their diet.

The variety of ways to purchase or consume Goji berries is vast. You can by them dried, as a juice, as a powder. Any health shop sell these products and we have provided some links below to products we have tried and buy regularly. The easiest way to consume them is to sprinkle some dried Goji Berriers on your cereal or add it to a good trail mix (also containing walnuts and almonds but more on those in a different article). Or you can add the juice or powder to your smoothies for a real zing.
